Why did I choose to Homeschool?

The Homeschool Why

This week we started our second year of Homeschool. This journey has blessed my life, and my family, in so many ways. But I do often have friends and family who assume that this journey started because of the current circumstances of the world. Of course, wearing mask and socially distancing at school definitely solidified my decision, there were actually other aspect involved.

Almost 3 years ago I started to wonder what I was suppose to be doing next. My son was already in the public school system and my daughter was about to finish her last year of Christian Preschool. This meant that the following year both kids would be at school all day, and what was I suppose to do? I have been a stay-at-home Mom since pregnancy with my oldest!

Should I get a job? Was I suppose to have another baby? Join the PTA? Volunteer more at church? Volunteer somewhere in my City? Every time I considered one of these, God would conveniently have life circumstances tell me no. I knew I was suppose to be doing something. I felt that God had something planned, but i just couldn’t figure out what it was.

My kiddos always struggled in the public school system. I was the mom who always got pulled aside at either pick or drop off to be told that we needed to be doing more with them at home. Which frustrated me because we already did so much! And they weren’t always referring to doing more academically… They were always pushing for us to do something to change that our children were very physically busy and “fidgety”. My then 1st grader would come home with 2-3 hours of homework everyday. It was so frustrating for him, myself, and my husband. I remember one evening being extremely upset about it and out of pure frustration telling my husband, “With all of the work we do at home, I might as well just be teaching him!” My husband looked me straight in the eye and said, “Then why don’t you?”

From that moment on, I knew what God had planned. I knew what he was waiting for me to figure out. From that point on, every circumstance in our lives lead us on the path to homeschool our children. Every family is different and every child learns in their own way. I'm not by any means saying there is a right or wrong way to school children. I know the public school system wasn't working for our family. Our kids both needed extra help, but not enough help that the school deemed them "bad enough" for the systems help. It truly is not just a choice that you make, it is a lifestyle that involves the whole family and home atmosphere! Was this the easiest choice to have made? Absolutely not. But it has, by far, been the most rewarding. Which is usually how God works.

If you are considering homeschooling, or even looking to have a more connected relationship with kids in your home after school, I HIGHLY recommend reading these books. They truly opened my eyes to how we now parents our kiddos.
