I have known for exactly one week that I am having a Baby Girl and have already started several sewing projects in celebration! I am very limited on floor space in the camper for quilting. Therefore, I decided on a rag quilt, knowing it would be the easiest. And fastest!
I chose 3 coordinating fabrics. Instead of using batting, rag quilts use a flannel lining. I started with 1.5 yards of all 4 fabrics. You can use more or less, but this is what I had on hand. For the this quilt you will need:
6 - 6.5"x44" strips in main fabric
3 - 6.5x44" strips in flannel
12 - 4.5"x44" strips in accent 1 color
6 - 4.5"x44" strips in flannel
8 - 2.5"x44" strips in accent 2 color
4 - 2.5"x44" strips in flannel
Create fabric "sandwiches" using 2 fabrics strips in the same print and 1 flannel strip. All the same size. Place your first strip right side DOWN, then a strip of flannel, and a second strip right side UP. Do this for all of your fabric strips.
Sew a seam in the center and down the entire 44" length of each strip.
Decide on the finished pattern you would like your strips. Pin them together along the 44" sides and sew a 1/4 to 1/2" seam. The larger your seam, the more the ragged your edges will be.
After all of your seams are sewn, cut 3/4 of the way through your seams. Do this all along the edge to help your fabric fray and fluff.
Using your favorite method, add binding around the entire outside edge of your quilt.
Wash and dry your quilt with a tiny bit of detergent and on low settings. This will help to fluff your rag edges and get rid of all the strings. Thanks for letting me share! If you have any questions feel free to email me or comment below. Happy Monday!
